Sip of Summer: A Watermelon Mint Cooler Mocktail
There’s nothing quite like a cold watermelon mint cooler on a sweltering afternoon — it’s the kind of drink that makes people ask what’s in it before they’ve even finished the first sip. If you love the real version, or you’ve just always wanted to try one, this mocktail gives you that same fresh, fruity payoff.
Whether you’re cutting back, pregnant, hosting a family gathering with guests of all ages, or just not drinking today, this one’s built so everyone at the party can grab the exact same glass with the exact same garnish — no separate “kid drink” or “boring drink” required.
I started making this one specifically because I got tired of handing lemonade to my non-drinking guests while everyone else got something prettier. Now it’s just the cooler I make for everybody, full stop.

Why This One’s So Easy to Make Alcohol-Free
Just like the Moscow Mule, the vodka (or sometimes light rum) in a watermelon cooler is mostly there for the kick, not the flavor — the fresh watermelon, lime, and mint genuinely carry the whole drink.
Several classic recipes even note directly that you can simply omit the alcohol and add a little extra sparkling water, since the spirit’s only real job was thinning things out.
Equipment You Will Need
- A blender
- A fine-mesh strainer
- A muddler (or the back of a spoon)
- A pitcher or cocktail shaker
Watermelon Mint Cooler Mocktail
A light, fresh, completely alcohol-free cooler built on real watermelon juice and muddled mint.
- Total Time: 8 minutes
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups cubed seedless watermelon
6–8 fresh mint leaves, plus more for garnish
1/2 oz fresh lime juice
1/2 oz simple syrup, to taste
2 oz club soda or sparkling water
Instructions
- Blend the watermelon until smooth, then strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a pitcher to remove the pulp.
- In the bottom of a glass, gently muddle the mint leaves with the lime juice to release the oils.
- Fill the glass with ice, then pour in the watermelon juice and simple syrup. Stir.
- Top with club soda, and garnish with a watermelon wedge and a fresh mint sprig.
Notes
- Watermelon’s natural sweetness varies a lot depending on ripeness — taste before adding the full amount of simple syrup.
- Leftover purée freezes beautifully into popsicles.
- Prep Time: 8 minutes
A Few Notes on Substitutions
- The club soda is replacing the volume (and gentle lift) that vodka would normally add — skip it and the drink turns thick and overly sweet.
- No special flavor substitute is needed for the alcohol here, since it wasn’t contributing much flavor to begin with — this is one of the most forgiving cocktails to mocktail-ify.
- Light rum versions taste similar to vodka ones, so this same swap works no matter which spirit the original recipe called for.
