Layers of Sunshine: An Orange Sunrise Mocktail
An orange sunrise is one of those drinks people make for the look almost as much as the taste — that little red-to-orange gradient never stops being fun to watch settle into the glass. If that visual is what drew you in, or you just remember loving the real thing, this version delivers the exact same payoff.
Whatever has you skipping the alcohol tonight — pregnancy, sobriety, being the designated driver, or simply not feeling like it — this one’s an easy, no-questions-asked option that doesn’t taste like an afterthought.
This is actually one of the easiest drinks I make for mixed crowds, because the alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions look identical sitting on the same table. No one has to announce which glass is which, and that’s exactly the point.

Why the Layers Still Work
Both the vodka and tequila versions of this drink lean on orange juice and grenadine for nearly all of their flavor — and the layered “sunrise” look comes from grenadine simply being denser than juice, which has nothing to do with alcohol at all.
Skipping the spirit does make the drink a touch sweeter and flatter, so a splash of soda water brings back some lift, which is the same trick most bartenders use to mocktail-ify this one.
Equipment You Will Need
- A tall (highball) glass or hurricane glass
- A bar spoon or straw, for the slow grenadine pour
- Knife for cutting garnish
Orange Sunrise Mocktail
A vibrant, layered, completely alcohol-free mocktail that’s as fun to make as it is to drink.
- Total Time: 3 minutes
Ingredients
- 4 oz fresh orange juice
- oz club soda or lemon-lime soda
- 1/2 oz grenadine
- Oange slice and cherry, for garnish
Instructions
- Fill a tall glass with ice.
- Pour in the orange juice and club soda, and stir gently to combine.
- Slowly pour the grenadine into the center of the glass — it’s heavier than the juice, so it will sink and create the “sunrise” gradient.
- Don’t stir again. Garnish with an orange slice and cherry, and serve right away so the layers stay pretty.
Notes
- For a deeper gradient, pour the grenadine even more slowly, straight down the center.
- This one is best assembled right before serving — once it’s stirred, the layered look is gone for good.
- Prep Time: 3 minutes
A Few Notes on Substitutions
- Grenadine is already alcohol-free — it’s a pomegranate syrup, so it carries over exactly as-is from the cocktail version, no substitution needed.
- Club soda or lemon-lime soda replaces the volume that vodka or tequila would normally add to the glass.
- For a little extra acidity (mimicking the faint bite tequila brings to this drink), add a small squeeze of fresh lime when you add the orange juice.
