What is Elderflower Cordial?
Elderflower cordial is a soft drink made with elderflower, water, and sugar.
It is a mild-tasting, sweet drink made from the elderflower tree, which is commonly found in Northern Europe and parts of North America.
It’s latin name is sambucus: this is the same plant that give you the popular Italian drink sambuca, however, sambuca is made with elderflower berries while elderflower cordial is made with the flowers of the same plant.
Elderflowers are small, white, delicate, and pretty. If you make your own elderflower cordial, it is worth picking a few extra flowers for their aesthetic value. They are a lovely decoration for a drink or your table!
Elderflower trees blossom between May and mid-June in the north of Europe and are best picked when they are freshly opened.
Since their season is rather short, we make this recipe with ready-made elderflower cordial. You can also use dried elderflowers for decoration.
