Halloween Scavenger Hunt for Teens: A Competitive Twist on Trick-or-Treating

This Halloween Scavenger Hunt for Teens turns trick-or-treating into a competitive team challenge with things to find, photos to capture, costumes to spot, and plenty of opportunities to earn points along the way.

It’s perfect for teens who have outgrown the traditional kids’ Halloween scavenger hunt but still want something fun to do while they’re out on Halloween night.

Instead of simply checking off everything they see, divide into teams and decide which challenges to tackle, keep track of points, and race to finish with the highest score.

And there’s a twist: the first team back gets bonus points, but being first doesn’t automatically make you the winner! There’s a little strategy involved!

How to Play the Teen Halloween Scavenger Hunt

This game works best with small teams of teens. Depending on the age of the players and your neighborhood, you can have adults supervise from a distance or have teams stay within an agreed area.

The hunt is divided into three categories:

🔎 Find It

Teams need to find Halloween decorations and unusual sights around the neighborhood.

Some challenges are easy, while others are harder to spot, so they’re worth different numbers of points. A simple find might be worth 1 point, while a particularly unusual find can be worth 3 points.

The goal isn’t necessarily to complete everything. Teams can decide which challenges are worth chasing.

📸 Snap It

These challenges require the team to take a photo as proof.

This is where things get a little more creative. Teams might have to recreate a skeleton’s pose, make an ordinary Halloween decoration look terrifying, or come up with their own ridiculous Halloween photo.

Snap It challenges are worth more points because they take a little more time, creativity and effort.

Remember, the goal is to have fun with your own team rather than photograph strangers without their permission.

👀 Spot It

The Spot It section is all about keeping your eyes open while you’re out trick-or-treating.

Teams might spot a pet in costume, a clever costume, a matching costume, or someone giving out something other than candy.

Some of these challenges are worth more points because they’re harder to find — and some are deliberately subjective. If you’re playing competitively, have teams quickly note what they spotted so you can settle any disputes when everyone gets back.

How the Scoring Works

This is what makes the teen version different from a traditional Halloween scavenger hunt.

Not every challenge is worth the same number of points.

Easier challenges are worth fewer points, while more difficult, creative, or unusual challenges are worth more.

Find It

1–3 points per challenge

Snap It

2–5 points per challenge

Spot It

1–3 points per challenge

Teams should keep track of their own scores as they go.

And there’s one more bonus:

First Team Back: +5 Bonus Points

The first team to return to the designated meeting point earns an extra 5 points.

But here’s the catch…

The first team back is NOT automatically the winner.

A team that takes a little longer but completes more high-value challenges can still beat the team that races back first.

That means teams have to balance speed, strategy and points.

Do you grab the easy points and head back early?

Or do you risk spending a little longer hunting for those 3-, 4- and 5-point challenges?

That’s up to you.

Make It a Team Challenge

This scavenger hunt works particularly well with groups of friends.

Divide players into teams of around 2–5 people and give each team a printable.

You could even give the teams spooky names before they head out — The Graveyard Gang, The Nightmares, The Black Cats, The Ghost Crew, or whatever they come up with themselves.

If you have several teams, set a specific return time and meeting point before everyone heads out.

When the teams return, check their completed challenges, add up their points, and award the +5 first-team-back bonus.

Then announce the winner!

And don’t be surprised if the team that came sprinting back first discovers they were beaten by the group that stayed out hunting for those higher-value challenges.

Safety First

Because this game takes place after dark, make sure everyone knows the boundaries and expectations before heading out.

A few simple rules:

• Stay together with your team.
• Stick to well-lit streets and sidewalks.
• Don’t run into the road or cross the street unsafely to complete a challenge.
• Keep phones charged if they’re being used for the Snap It challenges.
• Agree on a specific area where teams are allowed to go.
• Set a definite return time and meeting place.
• Don’t enter anyone’s property or approach houses that aren’t participating in trick-or-treating.
• Don’t photograph strangers without permission.
• Younger teens should have appropriate adult supervision.

The scavenger hunt should add to the Halloween fun — not turn into a reason to take unnecessary risks.
