Adopt-a-Dinosaur: The Party Favor Station That Will Make Your Dino Part Roar!
Here’s the truth about party favors: most end up forgotten in the car or broken by bedtime. But the only party my kids still talked about months (years!) later? The one where each child adopted a little stuffed pony to take home.
They were obsessedโnaming them, creating stories, genuinely attached to their new friends. That got me thinking: this concept could work for so many themes with just a little tweaking. So we tried it with dinosaurs at my son’s birthday, and it was a hit.
Here’s how we pulled off our own Dinosaur Adoption Station, with helpful tips you can adapt for your celebration.

What Exactly IS a Dinosaur Adoption Station?
Think of it like this โ instead of a standard party bag sitting by the door, you create a little “adoption centre” where each child gets to choose their very own dinosaur to take home as their new companion. They pick their dino, give it a name, and receive an official adoption certificate to prove it’s theirs forever.
It sounds simple. The reaction from the children is anything but.
We’re talking wide eyes, serious debate over which dinosaur is “the one,” ceremonial naming discussions, and children clutching their certificates on the way home after just receiving the most important document of their lives. Because to them? They absolutely have.
Why It Works So Well
What makes the Dinosaur Adoption Station so special is simple: kids get to choose. Instead of receiving a pre-selected favor, they pick their own dinosaur, give it a name, and make it officially theirs. That small act of choice turns an ordinary toy into something they’re genuinely excited about.
It works beautifully across ages, too. Toddlers love the tactile joy of picking up soft plushies and carrying them around like treasures. Five and six-year-olds take the paperwork incredibly seriouslyโnothing matters more than filling in an official certificate with their name on it.
And even the older kids who claim they’re “too cool” for party games will quietly and earnestly name their dinosaur when they think no one is watching.
The best part? You can scale it to fit your party. Go all out and make it the main event with elaborate setups and themed activities, keep it simple as a small station kids visit between games, or use it as a heartfelt thank-you gift that doubles as entertainment.
However you approach it, the Dinosaur Adoption Station adds that memorable touch that keeps kids talking long after the party ends.
How to Set Up Your Dinosaur Adoption Station
This is genuinely one of the easiest party activities to pull together. Here’s all you need:
The Dinosaurs
You have two brilliant options depending on your budget and vibe:
Plastic dinosaurs โ bags of assorted plastic dinosaurs are available from toy shops, pound shops, dollar stores and online retailers for very little money. A bag of 20-30 mixed dinosaurs gives children a fantastic choice and costs just a few dollars. These are great for a larger guest list or for a really tactile, hands-on choosing experience.
Plushie dinosaurs โ soft dinosaur plushies feel more like a “proper” gift and double up beautifully as a keepsake. These cost a little more per dinosaur but make an incredible impression, especially for smaller guest lists or milestone birthdays.
Check Amazon, or even charity shops, for surprisingly affordable options!
Mix and match โ there’s absolutely nothing stopping you from offering a mix of both and letting children choose which type they’d like. Some children will go straight for the soft option, others will want the most realistic-looking plastic T-Rex they can find. Let them choose and watch the personality come out! ๐ฆ
The Display
You don’t need to go overboard here โ the dinosaurs themselves do the work. Some easy display ideas:
- Line them up along a table covered in a green tablecloth with some artificial foliage or ferns tucked in between (hello, Jurassic Park vibes)
- Use a shallow wooden crate or wicker basket labelled “Adopt a Dinosaur”
- Create little name tags for each dinosaur type (T-Rex, Stegosaurus, Triceratops etc.) โ children love knowing the proper names!
- Add some small rocks or moss from the garden for an extra jungle feel
- A simple handwritten or printed sign saying “Dinosaur Adoption Centre โ Open for Business!” sets the whole scene beautifully
The Certificate
This is where the magic gets official. Each child fills in their adoption certificate at the station โ their name, their dinosaur’s name, and the adoption date. For younger children, have a grown-up or older sibling help with the writing. For older children, give them the full ceremonial experience of completing it themselves.

Print your certificates on cardstock for a lovely, sturdy keepsake they can actually take home and display. Trust me โ these end up on bedroom walls.
The Poster
A dinosaur adoption poster displayed at the station ties the whole thing together and signals to arriving guests that something exciting is happening here. Go for a larger print size โ an 11″ร14″ in a simple clip frame looks brilliant and costs next to nothing to put together.
How to Run It at the Party
There are two ways to approach the adoption station, depending on your party format:
Option 1 โ End of party send-off
Keep the adoption station as the grand finale. As children leave, they visit the station, choose their dinosaur, fill in their certificate, and head home with their new companion.
This works brilliantly because it gives every child something to look forward to throughout the party AND means you’re not managing small children carrying toys for the entire duration!
Option 2 โ Arrival activity
Set the adoption station up as an arrival activity while you’re waiting for all the guests to arrive. Early arrivals go straight to choosing their dinosaur and filling in their certificate, which keeps them happily occupied while latecomers trickle in.
This works especially well for younger children who can get restless waiting for a party to “start.”
Either way, we’d suggest having a grown-up stationed nearby to help with writing and to keep the choosing process moving along if you have a large group โ some children will deliberate for a very long time over which dinosaur is destined to be theirs!
Your Printable Dinosaur Adoption Kit
If you’d like to skip the design work entirely and go straight to printing, we’ve put together a ready-to-print Dinosaur Adoption Kit over in the Little Party Pixie shop. It includes:

What to Pair It With
The adoption station works beautifully as a standalone activity, but if you’re going full dinosaur party, here’s what we love pairing it with to complete the theme:
๐ฆ Dinosaur food tent cards on the buffet table โ label your dishes with fun dino names (Raptor Wraps, anyone?) alongside the pre-printed dinosaur names and characters (get our full list of dino-themed food suggestions over here!)
๐ฆ Dinosaur favor gift tags tied to the party bag or attached to the adoption certificate itself with a piece of curling ribbon โ such a sweet finishing touch
๐ฆ A dinosaur party invitation that sets the prehistoric tone from the very first moment guests open their messages
FOOD TENTS

When everything ties together visually, the whole party feels intentional and considered โ and that’s the difference between a party that’s fun and a party that’s remembered.
Alternatives & Variations to Try
Love the concept but want to put your own spin on it? Here are some ideas:
- Adopt-a-Unicorn โ swap the dinosaurs for small unicorn plushies or plastic unicorn figures and adapt the certificates. Magical for a unicorn or fantasy-themed party
- Adopt-a-Bunny โ perfect for Easter parties, spring celebrations or a woodland animal theme. Small bunny plushies are widely available and incredibly affordable
- Adopt-a-Monster โ brilliant for Halloween parties or a monster-themed birthday. Let children choose their monster, name it, and give it an “official” Monster Adoption Certificate
- Adopt-a-Bear โ a classic for a teddy bear picnic theme or a cosy winter birthday. You could even set up a simple dressing station where children add a tiny scarf or bow to their bear before adopting!
- Adopt-a-Pet โ for an animal lover’s party, mix different small plastic or plushie animals and let children adopt whichever species calls to them
The certificate concept works for almost any animal or creature theme โ it’s genuinely one of the most versatile party favour ideas we’ve come across, and the children’s reaction never gets old, no matter which version you try.
